'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed Ruben's offending to the court.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer program which he ran.

The man conducted a "candy game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel said, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had played this game with the boys "for many years", and children had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She explained Ruben had been able to explain this over a long period as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel explained objects including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the police about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she added.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the incident.

The legal representative explained the children were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five children.
