New research reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
