British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
